Known to the Sinhalese as Lanka and the Tamils as Llankai. The Romans called it Taprobane. To the Arabs it was Serendib. The Portuguese called it Ceilao and the Dutch Ceylan before the British altered it to Ceylon. Sri, meaning "auspicious", was added in 1971.
