A day trip to Holy Island. A wild morning but a beautiful afternoon. The island is cut off at high tide and crossed by a causeway at low tide.
St Aidan came from Iona to found the first monastery on the island in AD635 and became a centre of high Anglo Saxon culture. The monastery was abandoned after the Viking attacks of the 8th century and refounded as a priory by the Benedictine monks of Durham after the Norman conquest.
