Located near Llangollen, Valle Crucis was founded in 1201 as a Cistercian Monastery, a daughter house of Whitland Abbey, itself a daughter house of Clairvaux Abbey. It was the last Cistercian foundation in Wales and although much smaller than other Cistercian foundations, especially in England, it was by its Dissolution in 1537 the second wealthiest house in Wales after Tintern. Numerous local legends connect the Abbey with Owain Gwyndwr, leader of a 15 year long Welsh revolt against the rule of Henry IV.
