After 40 years association with Cumbria I finally made it to Carlisle Castle on a dark miserable winter's morning which eventually cleared to a beautiful afternoon.
Built by William II around 1130 as a Norman style Motte and Bailey Castle, during the Norman Eexpansion north into what was then Scottish territory. The curtain walls date from the late 12th century. Until quite recently the castle was still in use as a garrison.
