The 13th century ruined Caergwrle Castle was first built by prince Dafydd ap Gruffudd, in lands given to him by Edward I of England after the first Welsh campaign of 1277. Edward retook the castle after Dafydd rebelled. Little remains of the fortress, which follows the outline of local rock outcrops on the top of a local promontory, save the the shell of two towers and a small section of the single curtain wall.
