Another absolute gem. A shrine dating from the 7th Century and still in use a site of pilgrimage today. The current shrine dates from the late 15th/early 16th Centuries, from the private resources of Margaret Beaufort, Dowager Countess of Richmond, mother of Henry Tudor(later, Henry VII) and wife of Thomas Stanely, Earl of Derby who sat out the Battle of Bosworth Field until he saw who would was gaining the advantage at which point he commited his forces to support Henry Tudor, thereby deposing Richard III and establishing Henry VII. That the shrine survived the despoliation of her grandson Henry VIII is remarkable.
