Under the auspices of English Heritage with free entry, located about 4 miles north of Durham, Finchale, founded 1197, suppressed 1535, was a Benedictine Priory, daughter House of Durham Abbey, for which it acted as a holiday home, three Durham monks joining the four resident monks for periods of 3 weeks. The ruins are extensive though unlabelled and even with a good knowledge of the basics of monastery layouts, the level of modifications over 300 years makes it quite difficult to discern the components.
