The island of Rodos has been occupied since the neolithic period (~7000 BC) and traces of all the major middle eastern and Greek civiliations have been found. The city of Rodos was founded in 408 BC as a joint venture by the three major cities of Ixia, Ialysos and Kamiros.

In recent times the The Saint John Hospitallers seized the islad in 1309 after the fall of Acre in 1291 AD resulted in the loss of Hospialler territory in the Holy Land. The city fell to the Ottomans in 1522 AD.
