Seen from a distance, especially from height, Bamburgh Castle is magnificent. The castle stands on a basalt outcrop, the site was the seat of the Anglo-Saxon Kings of Bernicia.
The castle defences were the first in England to be defeated by artillery, by the Earl of Warwick during the Wars of the Roses, after which it fell into increasing disrepair. The Armstrong family bought the ruins and restored the castle. So what now stands on the site is a Victorian fantasy of a what a mediaeval castle should look like.
