The Saxon history of Pershore Abbey appears to be shrouded in mist but the first foundation was probably in the late 7th century, followed by rapid decline and refoundation in the mid 10th century as a Benedictine monastery with assets of over 30,000 acres much of which was stripped by Edward the Confessor to endow Westminsster Abbey. The currrent buidling was begun around 1100. All that remains today is the chancel, the Central Tower and the South Transept. Flying buttresses were added in 1913 to support the Central Tower.
