Founded 1156. Dissolved 1537. Originally a Savignac Abbey until the Savignacs foundations in England were absorbed by the Cistercians.

Very little remains of what was once one of the major abbeys of England. Only the pillars of the Nave and some sections of the walls remain of the church. The most visible structures are from the claustral buildings.

The abbey was dissolved after the last Abbot, Adam Sedbergh, was hanged,drawn and quartered in 1537 for his role in the Pilgrimage of Grace.
