Nisyros lies northwest of Tilos and Rodos. It is about 40 sq km in area, born of volcanic activity 150 thousand years ago. The visible caldera is 3 km wide at present but this betrays the full size of the volcanic structure which extends under the island of Kos, some 20 km to the north.
