An abbey church was built in in 705. In 909 Wells became the seat of the Diocese of Wells which was then moved to Bath in 1090 following the Conquest. Construction of the present building began in about 1175 and was complete by 1306. For a few hundred years the seat of the bishopric oscillated between Bath and Wells with occasional sojourns at Glastonbury before Pope Innocent IV in 1224 institued the Diocese of Bath and Wells with the principal seat at Wells. A chapter of secualr clergy has run the church and cathedral sinc ethe 11th century.
