Old Cairo is a wonderful place, just go out on foot and get lost in the narrow streets and markets. At least in 1989 the locals didn't see too many westeners and were all eager to show off their magnificent mosques, some of which pre-date the Norman Cathedrals by 300 years and are every bit as aew inspiring.
