The current abbey dates from 1499, having replaced numerous former abbeys and churches on the site since the mid 8th century. Built in the very late Gothic Perpendicualr style, it was dissolved in 1539, before it was complete, and left to rot before Elizabeth I granted public funds to restore the abbey as the parish church of Bath. The fan vaulting in the chancel is original, having been designed by the same architect who built the Lady Chapel at Peterborough and Henry VII's chapel at Westminster; the fan vaulting in the nave, designed by Gilbert Scott, is a 19th century replacement for a timber roof. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_Abbey
