Dating from about 110AD, situated on a rocky outcrop above the River Nidd, little now remains except segments of the curtillage wall and the great keep, built by Edward II. From Henry 1 through the Plantagenets the castle was regarded as strategically very important and vast sums were spent on its upkeep. The list of custodians over the years includes Piers Gavestoon, Phillippa of Hainault, John of Gaunt and Kathryn Swynford.
