250 miles south of Anchorage, Kodiak is the starting point for bears tours in Katmai National Park. Salmon fishing summer months is the main commercial activity but it is also home to a US Coastguard station covering all the waters along the Aleutian Island chain to Russia and a the site of a major training base for the US Navy Seals.
