Not discovered until 1919, during scientific expeditions to Katmai follwing a volcanic erruption, Geographic Harbor, in Amilik Bay, was our first land call. Because of a major storm which promised 12 foot waves along the Shelikof Starit and which would left us very exposed at our first intended port of call - Hallo Bay - the master of the Kittiwake ran ahead of the storm for shelter in Geographic Harbour, where we had nothing but rain and fog but calm seas.
