The site of one of the most important abbeys in England's Christian history, a Benedictine monastery founded in 598AD, where St Augustine first established a church after converting King Aethelberht. The abbey, which is also the site of Augustine's burial and hence a great place of pilgrimage, was dissolved in 1538. Virtually nothing remains now.
