The original church on this site was founded as a kmonastery by Irish monks the 660s then refounded as Benedictine by St Wilfred in the 672. The current building is the fourth stone church dating from the 13th to 16th C. It has been collegiate since the 10thC. It was designated a Cthedral in 1836.
