The Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, originally a Benedictine foundation, endowed in 1083 by Roger de Montgomery, a lieutenant of William the Bastard at the Conquest. The Abbey was amongst the last to be dissolved, in January 1540 by which time it was the 34th richest in the land, owing to pilgrimages in honour of Saint Winifred, a Saxon saint whose remains were miraculously discovered in the mid 12th century and translated to Shrewsbury.
