One of six former abbeys dissolved (January 1540) by Henry VIII and refounded as cathedrals, in this case with last Abbot of Tewksbury Abbey created the first Bishop of Gloucester, in a diocese carved out of the diocese of Worcester, thereby creating reducing Worcester's income and much tension between the two in the process. A Benedictine monastery had existed on the since the 7th century. It was refounded in 1095 as the Abbey of St Peter and was consecrated in 1100. The cathedral is most famous for its 14th century Cloister, unusally, on the north side of the abbey, with a spectacular vaulted roof, setting for filming of Harry Potter. Updated June 2019 with photos of the stunning Cloisters, designed in the 1330s and completed by 1412, but sadly, probably better known as the setting of several scenes from Harry Potter films.
