Lying onn the north bank of the River Douro at its mouth to the Atlantic Ocean, 300 km from Lisbon, is Porto. On the south bank is Gaia. In combination the two, in popular lore, make Portugal. The city is the commercial centre of the Port Wine trade; the river banks of Gaia are lined with warehouses where the wine matures before sale. The wealth of the city deriving from the wine trade and from the Portugese colonies is evident, especially in the High Baroque decoration of the churches.
