Regarded by many as a precursor to the Pilgrimage of Grace, The Lincolnshire Rising began on 1 October 1536 after Vespers at St James Churc, Louth, a prosperous market town in Licolnshire. The Rising began in response to the suppression of the nearby Cistercian Louth Park Abbey on 8 September1536, one of the earliest dissolutions of Minor foundations. Up to 40,000 people marched on Lincoln and occupied the Cathedral, demanding an end to the changes in reilious practice institued by Henry VIII and the right to practice freely as Roman Catholics. The Uprising ended on 4 October 1536 when faced with the threat of forces lead by the Duke of Suffolk.
