Hereford cathedral, home of the Mappa Mundi, and shrine to Aethelberg, King of the East Angles. allegedly murdred by Offa in AD 794. Hereford was the centre of a huge diocese stretching from Shrewsbury in the north to Monmouth in the south and was strategically important for control of the Welsh Borders throughout the late mediaeval period.
