Situated on a rocky outcrop high aabove the River Wye, Chepstow Castle was one of the first castles constructed after the Norman Conquest, datinf from 1067. Its location guarded Herefors and Gloucester from attack from the Welsh kingdom of Gwent and a base for subsequent Norman incursions into Wales.
