The caves originated in the 3rdC BC as shelters during the monsoon when the itinerant life of a monk became impossible. Most were sponsored by merchants who found Buddhism more attractive than the oppressive caste system of Hinduism. As the local ruling dynasties embraced Buddhism the first large scale monastery caves were created in the 2ndC BC
